MyFolder Editor's Review

MyFolder has two components: a web server for storing files, and a client application, which you can use to upload or download your documents. The program can be installed on any computer running Windows 2000, Windows XP, or a newer operating system. You need to have Java Runtime Environment installed on both the client and the server computer, to be able to run this program. The server should always be connected to the Internet and have a real IP address, if you want to access the MyFolder server from anywhere. The alternative is to use it locally on your LAN. In this case, you only need to know the IP address of the computer running the server application.

Each user must first connect to MyFolder server using a special URL. The webpage displayed at this URL offers the user 3 options for installing the MyFolder Client application. There are a Java Webstart, a Windows, and a Linux application installer available for download. I tested both, the Webstart application and the Windows installer, and they work fine.

The client application's UI (user interface) looks nice and is very easy to use. To better organize your files you can use the tree-view from the left side, which shows you the folders. On the right, there is a list of the files in the current folder. Info about each file's owner, size, filename, and last update time are displayed on this list.

You can use the "admin" username and the "admin123" password the first time you connect to the MyFolder database. You can add other users only when you connect as "admin".

Pluses: Allows you to synchronize your local files with the ones on the web server. This makes it easy to have multiple users working on the same documents. If you happen to work on the same document at the same time with another user, the application will ask you which version you want to keep, the local one (which you modified), or the one on the web server.

Drawbacks / flaws: I installed MyFolder server application on my computer. I connected to this server from another computer on my local area network as "admin". Everything worked fine except creating a new folder. When I tried to create a folder, the program didn't display the "New folder" dialog, nor did it display any error message.

In conclusion: This software is a nice system for creating a backup of your important files, and for sharing them online.
